Paul was born to Edward C. and Joyce E. (Wakefield) Schmid, Jr. December 31, 1960. He was the last baby born that year at the old St. Joseph Hospital in Bloomington, IL and made the newspaper.
Paul grew up on the family farm walking beans, baling hay, farming, mowing grass, and doing a lot of maintenance, building, and repairs. As a small boy, Paul loved his collection of padlocks and keys he carried around in an old woolen bag. When he was young, Paul raised rabbits and chickens, supplying the family with plenty of eggs. Paul learned to cook these eggs in bacon grease but would throw them out and start over if he broke a yolk.
He worked several jobs including Revere Copper & Brass, Portec, Syngenta, CBRE, and the Wapella Auction House. Paul recently retired from the Village of Wapella as Maintenance Supervisor. He was very skilled at fixing or repairing just about anything. Frequently, he helped out family, friends, and neighbors doing odd jobs.
He was a Wapella Wildcat, graduating in 1979. Paul overcame alcohol abuse in 1987. Since 2001, he continued to farm the homestead that has been in the family for over 100 years.
Survivors include his siblings, Judy Mowery, Heyworth, IL; Larry (Kathy) Schmid, Waynesville, IL; Marti (Rene Stidham) Schmid, Macks Creek, MO; Chris (Fritz) Robinson, Kenney, IL; Bonnie Schmid, Clinton, IL; and Kevin (Debby) Schmid, McLean, IL, sister-in-law, Jane Schmid, Heyworth, IL, uncles, Charles Thomas, Waynesville, IL; and Jim Easter, AZ; along with many nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, cousins, and special friends.

The family would like to give a special “Thank you” to the Wapella Fire Department, DeWitt County EMS, and DeWitt County Sherriff’s Department.
